Controlling ANTiparasitic resistance in Equines Responsibly, CANTER, is a collaborative, industry led organisation, the first initiative of its kind worldwide, dedicated to tackling anthelmintic resistance. Its activities are orchestrated by a Core Steering Group which comprises approximately 20 representatives from across the equine sector with an active interest in the sustainable control of parasites in equines. There are seven further subgroups that underpin the aims of the group.
Julia Shrubb is the current chair of CANTER. Many organisations contribute to the development of CANTER including; Prescriber groups, Diagnostic providers, Pharmaceutical companies, Retail/trade organisations, Veterinary associations, Parasitologists, Horse owners, Charities, Guidance/policy makers. Core steering group representatives are a pan-industry representation of individuals and organisations with an active interest in the sustainable control of equine parasites. The Group’s membership is detailed in the CANTER Core Steering Group Terms or Reference that can be found here.
The group is funded by industry and operates under the stewardship of the Responsible Use of Medicines Alliance – Companion Animal and Equine (RUMA CA&E) which provides governance, financial management, and administrative support. RUMA CA&E’s values and approach closely align with CANTER’s mission, making them a natural partner to sustain and build upon the group’s achievements.
The RUMA Companion Animal & Equine (RUMA CA&E) Alliance was established in 2020 to define the principles of responsible use of medicines in the companion animal and equine sectors with a view to contributing positively to the One Health agenda. This collaboration covers the responsible use of medicines in dogs, cats, rabbits, small mammals, exotic animals kept as pets, and equids. The aim is for the UK to lead the way in these sectors through evidence-based and measurable activities that will promote and enhance stewardship.
