AMTRA (the Animal Medicines Training Regulatory Authority) has published the results of its largest-ever industry survey, conducted to better understand and communicate the value of Suitably Qualified Persons (SQPs), also known as Animal Medicines Advisors. The initiative, which gathered insights from over 900 respondents including SQPs, animal owners, veterinary teams, and retailers, reveals overwhelming appreciation for the role SQPs play in supporting animal health and welfare.
The headline results were shared at AMTRA’s Summer Stakeholder event, 11th June 2025, at Harper Adams University. Among the standout findings:
- 96% of SQPs expressed pride in their profession
- 87% of animal owners rated the service received from their SQP as good or excellent
- 91% of owners felt that losing access to SQPs would negatively impact their ability to care for their animals
- 75% of veterinary professionals recognised the SQP as an important or very important source of animal health advice
These statistics affirm the vital role of SQPs in promoting responsible medicine use and animal wellbeing. However, the survey also highlighted a need for greater awareness about the SQP role across some stakeholder groups, particularly horse and pet owners.
Driving Responsible Medicine Use
Responsible prescribing and supply of animal medicines lies at the heart of the SQP role. The survey results underscore public and professional trust in this responsibility:
- 91% of animal owners believe SQPs prescribe and supply responsibly
- 85% of veterinary teams agree
AMTRA CEO Stephen Dawson acknowledged the value of this feedback:
“We are incredibly grateful to everyone who contributed to the survey. Listening to the experiences and needs of SQPs and the wider industry is key to ensuring we continue to provide the right support and increase understanding of the SQP contribution to animal health.”
Next Steps: A National SQP Week
In response to the survey findings, AMTRA has announced plans to launch a National SQP Week in 2026, aimed at raising the profile of the profession and fostering greater industry-wide recognition. The initiative will promote awareness of how SQPs support responsible animal ownership, advise on the use of medicines, and contribute to overall animal care.
Stephen Dawson adds:
“We want to see SQPs more widely recognised as a core part of the animal health team. National SQP Week will be a chance to celebrate their impact and engage even more meaningfully with stakeholders across sectors.”
