CANTER Builds Momentum with Autumn Steering Group Meeting

CANTER Core steering group minutes

The CANTER Core Steering Group reconvened on 18th September 2025, celebrating a wave of progress as the initiative continues to lay solid foundations for tackling anthelmintic resistance in UK horses. Chair Julia Shrubb expressed gratitude for the collective effort from the industry and reaffirmed the benefits of CANTER operating under RUMA CA&E’s umbrella—strengthening transparency, governance, and resourcing.

Thanks to generous funding contributions and in-kind support from industry partners, CANTER now has the means to push forward its strategic priorities. Recent website updates reflect this progress, including a dedicated funding partners page, refreshed Industry News section, and improved transparency about how CANTER operates and who is involved.

Guideline development continues at pace. Chapters on quarantine and youngstock are in active development, while all ten existing guideline chapters will undergo annual review and be released as downloadable PDFs before the year’s end. A new large strongyle test has also prompted discussions on guideline updates.

The communications subgroup is shaping a horse-owner engagement strategy, exploring options like “calls to action,” awareness weeks, and digital tools. The research subgroup, meanwhile, launched a new Research Roadmap on the website and is working to develop a research database and curated reference list to support collaboration and evidence-based practice.

CANTER continues to explore the important topic of horse identification in parasite control, with discussions underway to consider future updates to regulatory frameworks to better support responsible prescribing.

With CANTER now firmly positioned as an independent, pan-industry initiative guided by expert collaboration, the group is poised to lead meaningful change.

To maintain full transparency and invite further engagement, the public minutes from the meeting are available to view on the CANTER website. Read more about our latest work:
