Veterinary practices across the UK are being encouraged to take part in the 2025 Animal Medicines Amnesty, a national campaign led by the Responsible Use of Medicines Alliance – Companion Animal & Equine (RUMA CA&E) to support the safe disposal of unused and out-of-date veterinary medicines.
Formerly known as the Antibiotic Amnesty, the campaign has evolved to reflect the importance of returning all types of veterinary medicines, not just antibiotics. The goal? To protect animal health, reduce the risk of antimicrobial resistance (AMR), and prevent harmful substances from polluting the environment.
The initiative invites practices to engage clients in conversations around responsible medicine use and to accept returned medicines—including parasiticides, pain relief, steroids, hormones and more—for safe and appropriate disposal. Educational materials, posters, social media content, and practical guidance are all available as part of the campaign toolkit on the RUMA CA&E website.
“Every medicine returned is a step towards better stewardship,” said Steve Howard, Secretary General of RUMA CA&E. “It protects pets, the public, and the planet. We’d love to see as many practices as possible get involved.”
Last year’s campaign saw the return of thousands of medicines—including 2,148 antibiotic tablets and a wide range of other medications—demonstrating strong engagement and real-world impact.
This year’s campaign is supported by Zoetis UK Ltd, whose backing helps extend the campaign’s reach across the profession.
Practices can get involved by:
- Displaying posters and stickers
- Sharing the message in newsletters, websites, and on social media
- Encouraging clients to return unused medications
- Using the campaign toolkit to brief staff and support conversations
Let’s work together to support responsible medicine use and disposal. Download the toolkit and find out more at RUMA CA&E. [links open in external website]
